POSITION SUMMARY:
Vanderlande’s Technology Department is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning of material handling systems for our customers. In this position, you will work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative customer-focused environment to determine and translate customer needs into simple and effective design solutions, provide accurate time estimates, produce manufacturing and assembly drawings, manage documentation, and create BOMs.
As a Senior Software Engineer (Embedded), you will work within projects to design, develop, integrate, and test high-quality (real-time) applications. You will develop efficient and effective solutions together with your team members. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team to realize scalable and flexible products that build the logistic systems of tomorrow. Where required, you will support your colleagues in the first pilots of new products. You will play a main role in developing software for our embedded microcontrollers.
These products will be used as building blocks by the Engineering department, who will subsequently integrate them into systems for our worldwide clients. Where necessary, you will support your colleagues in this integration process.
Essential Functions (Job Duties and Responsibilities):
* Translate concepts into realized alternatives, focusing on own discipline, taking into account functionality, feasibility, quality, manufacturability, costs, and completion time.
* Takes into account other relevant disciplines. Makes optimum use of team members’ expertise.
* Responsible for maintaining VI Equipment Product lines, including supporting documentation.
* Defines a planning for the work to be done, estimates the workload and lead time, and communicates to relevant colleagues about changes and risks pro-actively. Adapts to changes and is solution-oriented.
* Finalizes a design and its deliverables, according to our processes, to guarantee a smooth transition to the relevant stakeholders.
* Be a resource for coordinating technical details with VI Supply Chain.
* Make improvements to existing equipment designs.
* Support the start-ups and the rest of the departments that require their support, as well as ensure that safety and quality standards are met.
* Deal with customers and suppliers to achieve the best solution.
* Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities and project sites to evaluate processes and design improvements (<25%).
Required Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (e.g., Electronics, Mechatronics, or Software related).
* 7+ years’ experience in material handling or related industry.
* Experience with software design on Embedded platforms (C, C++) and optional Industrial PC (C#, C++).
* Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems.
* Experience with ARM Cortex M4 architecture.
* Knowledge of embedded controllers and industrial networks e.g., PROFINET, CIP Ethernet/IP, ASi-bus.
* Knowledge of field bus, I/O, sensors, actuators e.g., BLDC motors to large motor drives.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Direct experience designing complex automated systems with PLC/Embedded controlled systems, including safety designs, motor protection and control, and Industrial Communication and networking (i.e., ASi-bus, Ethernet, TCP/IP, Profinet).
* Experience field engineering on site.

* Understanding of product data/document lifecycle management software.
* Knowledge of controls engineering theories and principles.
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Self-motivated.
* Knowledge with MATLAB and Simulink.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of Agile processes and related frameworks, such as SAFe.

Travel:
This position requires up to 25% travel occasionally and requires having your own car.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires sitting/standing in front of a computer in a stationary position for the majority of the workday. This position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access office machinery (printers, etc.). Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
