Job Description
Position Overview
As a Tax Associate in our Madrid office, you will assist the day-to-day project accounting and tax activities supporting the development, financing, construction, and operational phases of energy projects and related entities in the United Kingdom, various corporate accounting tasks and tax compliance in Spain, and other support activities related to accounting, tax compliance, AP, and treasury functions for holding companies in Invenergy’s growing international portfolio. The position reports to the Controller, Spain based in Madrid, and is responsible for collaborating with the Accounting, Tax, and Treasury teams in Invenergy’s Chicago, USA office.
This position is generally assisting in closing the books and records of entities related to these projects, and provides tax compliance assistance on holding companies that have subsidiaries with electric generation projects in various stages of development, construction, and operations in El Salvador, Mexico, Canada, UK, etc.
Individual must be a self-starter, well organized, possess excellent computer skills, be able to multi-task and enjoy the challenge of taking on new and exciting opportunities.
Responsibilities
1. Assist in the preparation and review of the monthly, quarterly and annual tax returns.
2. Assist in the preparation and review of financial statements to verify account balances for accuracy and reasonableness in relation to the tax returns.
3. Maintain tax compliance tracker to ensure compliance and timely filings of all obligations.
4. Support transfer pricing analysis and country-by-country reporting.
5. Ensure accuracy of all tax compliance information for all assigned projects.
6. Assist with annual audit work papers and audit report preparation.
7. Support the coordination and resolution of project issues while working closely with colleagues in Asset Management, Project Management, Development, Insurance, Finance, etc.
8. Assist Controller, Spain in developing process improvements and greater efficiency within the department.
9. Contribute to development of tax compliance policies and procedures.
10. Assist in monitoring and controlling tax compliance and accounting activities within Invenergy group internationally, with special focus in Spain.
11. Support the preparation and submission of the monthly/quarterly tax returns filings (VAT and Withholding Tax) in Spain.
12. Support the provision and calculations of Corporate Income Tax in Spain.
13. Support the preparation and submission of Corporate Income Tax return and the periodic self-assessments in Spain.
14. Assist in other tasks and projects as assigned.
Experience and Skills
1. Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, and/or Tax Law.
2. 0 to 5 years of experience in Accounting, Tax Compliance, or International Tax Planning.
3. Existing knowledge in IFRS and Spanish GAAP is a plus but not required.
4. Experience in tax filing in the UK, Spain, Basque Country, the Canary Islands, or other EU countries is a plus but not required.
5. Experience in tax group consolidation is a plus but not required.
6. Spanish Tax Law specialization course is a plus but not required.
7. Extensive knowledge in VAT and Corporate Income Tax in Spain, tax knowledge in other EU countries preferred, but not required.
8. Experienced accounting software user (e.g. Oracle preferred, Microsoft Dynamics, etc.).
9. Bilingual in Spanish and English, both written and oral, required.
10. Intrinsically motivated with a desire to work in a fast-paced environment and with autonomy.
11. Responsible, dependable, and possessing an exceptional work ethic.
12. Ability to adhere to monthly, quarterly, and annual department driven deadlines.
13. Proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office skills is required.
14. Experience in energy industry preferred, but not required.
