Two Postdoctoral Contracts Exoplanets and Astrobiology 2023 (PS-2023-076)
The IAC (Tenerife) announces TWO postdoctoral contracts to work on the project linked to the line of research “Exoplanets and Astrobiology: preparatory science for the ARIEL mission”. The contracts are funded by the project “Science and Technology for the ARIEL Mission: IAC Contribution” (PID2021-125627OB-C32), led by Prof. Enric Palle.
Tasks: The “Exoplanets and Astrobiology” group at IAC participates in the Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) programs of the MUSCAT2 collaboration, the CHEOPS satellite and the CARMENES and ESPRESSO spectrographs. We have a leading role in the development of the ARIEL and PLATO space missions, as well as the ANDES spectrograph for the ELT. Finally, we are also involved in the follow-up of the TESS mission, and have a lively research team in the area of planetary atmospheres characterization.
The successful candidate will pursue research in the following fields:
* Characterization of exoplanet atmospheres by means of high-resolution spectroscopy using spectrographs such as HARPS-N, GIANO, CARMENES and/or ESPRESSO, or by means of low resolution spectrographs using 8-10 m class telescopes.
* Ground-based follow-up of the TESS mission, including photometric and radial velocity measurements.
* Analysis and observations of rocky planets with the JWST, and the use of molecular mapping for the analysis of atmospheres of giant planets with the JWST.
* Biomarkers and habitability of Earth-like planets.
Requirements: The candidates must have an excellent research record, commensurate with the duration of their research career. They must be in possession of a Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics or Physics by the application deadline. Candidates who have not received their doctorate before the deadline will not be admitted to the selection process. Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC have to present accreditations of complementary training at other research centers (this period should be either 1 continuous year or 18 accumulated months) by the application deadline.
Selection process: The selection process consists of two phases: merit assessment and interview.
1. First phase: merit assessment. The Selection Panel will verify and rate the merits documented by the applicants. The maximum score that can be awarded in this phase is 80 points.
* a) CV (maximum score: 60 points) Main criteria include scientific contributions, appointments at prestigious institutions, conference contributions, and other indicators of research activity.
* b) Adequacy to the objectives of the contract (maximum score 20 points) includes experience in transmission spectroscopy studies, data reduction, and programming skills.
2) Second phase: interview. (maximum score 20 points) Candidates who have obtained at least 50 points in the first phase will be invited to an interview.
Training: Candidates who have obtained their doctorate at the IAC must provide accreditation of a period of complementary training at other research centres.
Duration: The contract will be of indefinite duration. The estimated date of commencement will be during the first half of 2024.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary will be 38.000 Euros, with deductions of up to 20% for income tax (IRPF) and social security.
Extra financial support to start the contract: Up to 2500€ to cover necessary relocation costs when taking up the post at any IAC workplace.
Applicants from outside the EU: Successful applicants must obtain a residence and work permit (NIE card) from the Spanish immigration authorities.
Presentation of applications: Applications must be sent electronically via the web-based application system before the deadline set out in this advertisement.
The following documentation must be sent:
* Online application including the name and position code (PS-2023-076)
* Copy of a valid passport or national identity card
* CV, containing a list of publications
* Report on research activity and justification of suitability for the job -not exceeding 2 pages-
* Copy of your degree or corresponding stamped certificate
* Certificate of training in other centers (only for applicants that have completed their doctorate at the IAC).
Applications submitted after the deadline will be automatically rejected.
