Institute and Departmental Introduction
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) offers seven programmes of study and learning pathways, forming a comprehensive educational portfolio. Comprising three departments, along with key finance, operations, and engagement teams, the Institute strives for excellence in creativity, learning, teaching, and research. It is dedicated to delivering programmes that are unique, relevant, aligned with industry demand, and characterised by dynamic teaching environments and contemporary learning strategies.
The IAB aims to provide a stimulating, industry-integrated environment that fosters communication, collaboration, and innovation among a diverse community of learners within various creative and cultural contexts. Our academic faculty work closely with support staff in immersive, flexible, and work-based settings. The IAB is home to over 100 staff and 450 learners specialising in Acting, Dance, Commercial Dance, and Musical Theatre.
The Musical Theatre Department has been an integral part of the IAB for nearly a decade and is one of the EU’s leading providers of tertiary, degree-based education in musical theatre. Dedicated to excellence in musical theatre training, the department aims to develop fully integrated performers capable of thriving in the global performing arts industry. Its focus and reach are global, requiring strong advocacy at this level.
The department’s offerings currently include a Foundation Course (Musical Theatre), BA(Hons) Musical Theatre, and Master in Creative Performance Practice (Music Theatre). With nearly 190 full-time students, the Musical Theatre Department represents a substantial part of the IAB's provision. Led by an internationally recognised faculty, the department’s strong and effective links with the community and industry ensure vocational and professional programmes that equip graduates with practical and creative skills.
Purpose of the Role
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) seeks a dedicated and experienced Programme Leader to oversee its BA (Hons) Musical Theatre programme. This role requires a dynamic individual with expertise in musical theatre and proven leadership and educational skills. The Programme Leader will ensure the artistic and academic vision of the programme aligns with IAB’s mission and strategic goals, delivering a high-quality educational experience that prepares students for professional success in the global performing arts industry.

Essential Criteria
Education /Qualifications
· Postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional recognition/attainment in the dance or singing sector
Experience
· Leadership within a higher education sector relevant to the programme area
· Versatile and creative educator, with experience of teaching and/or examining at a range of levels and/or in a range of environments within the Higher Education sector with a particular focus on levels 4-6
· Established and current academic and/or professional profile in field relevant to the programme
· Experience of leading and supporting individuals and teams
· Experience in the development and implementation of systems that support the delivery of work efficiently and to a high standard
Knowledge and Understanding
· Demonstrable interest in curriculum development and knowledge of enhancement-led approaches to teaching delivery
· Knowledge of standard processes and expectations of the higher education sector, including matters relating to learning and teaching, assessment, quality assurance and the facilitation of student-centred learning
Skills and Attributes
· Ability to plan and deliver coherent and appropriate programmes of learning at a range of levels (undergraduate and postgraduate), including relevant formative and summative assessment activities
· Excellent communication skills (written and oral), including ability to operate as part of a team through consultation, co-operation and evidencing mutual professional respect
· Ability to utilise a range of IT systems/resources confidently and to good effect in relation to communication and in support of pedagogy
· Ability to deal directly with issues/problems and to seek the involvement/support of others where appropriate
· Skilled in use of ICT and virtual learning platforms including operating electronically based systems for both:
administrative and creative/learning purposes

· Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships at all levels and in particular to inspire and motivate students

· Active research profile in a relevant/related area/discipline (practice, pedagogy, musicology, etc.)

Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Programme Management
· Lead the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre programme, ensuring academic and operational excellence.
· Collaborate with the Head of Musical Theatre to design, deliver, assess, and continuously improve the programme to meet artistic, academic, and professional standards.
· Coordinate the development and annual review of programme and module materials, ensuring relevance to industry developments and educational benchmarks.
· Oversee quality assurance processes, including student and staff feedback, annual programme evaluations, and external examiner liaison.
· Represent the programme in institutional planning and participate in relevant committees, meetings and Collaborative Partner forums.
Teaching and Learning
· Deliver innovative, studio-based practical training, reflecting the diverse demands of professional musical theatre.
· Contribute to teaching across modules and provide individual guidance and mentorship to students.
· Ensure teaching practices support a range of career pathways and maintain high standards of academic and professional training.
Student Recruitment and Support
· Actively engage in student recruitment, collaborating with the Admissions team and assisting the Head of Musical Theatre with the audition and selection processes.
· Support students in their academic and professional development, providing guidance on careers, assessments, and personal growth.
Staff Support and Development
· Mentor and support module teaching staff, fostering collaboration and consistency across the programme.
· Communicate institutional policies and provide guidance on academic and operational matters.
· Identify and support staff development needs, working with relevant departments to deliver appropriate training.
Quality Assurance and Evaluation
* Monitor and maintain the quality of teaching materials, assessments, and Classlife resources, ensuring alignment with institutional benchmarks.
* Oversee assessment practices, ensuring consistency and adherence to best practices in higher education.
* Complete annual programme reviews and implement improvements based on student and staff feedback, as well as external examiner reports.
Professional and Administrative Responsibilities
· Engage in research and professional development to maintain expertise and ensure the programme’s relevance and quality.
* Build and maintain professional networks to enhance student opportunities and programme reputation.
* Participate in departmental and institutional committees, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making.
* Manage administrative tasks efficiently, including providing references for students and ensuring compliance with institutional policies.
