The Institute
The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed of an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team which is supported both by a flexible and efficient administration and by high-end and innovative technologies.
In April 2021, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) received the renewal of the 'HR Excellence in Research' Award from the European Commission. This is a recognition of the Institute's commitment to developing an HR Strategy for Researchers, designed to bring the practices and procedures in line with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).
The role
We are seeking a motivated Operations Manager to coordinate and ensure that all operational services run smoothly and meet high-quality standards.
The new team member will work closely with the EGA Team Head and a diverse group of professionals, including system administrators, developers, data curators, project managers, and helpdesk staff, in close collaboration with the European Bioinformatics Institute to coordinate the Helpdesk activities, the development of core services and the operations with our closer partners and relevant competitive projects. By working across various functions, the candidate will help guarantee that the EGA offers the best service to the global research community. Additionally, the Operations Manager will contribute to competitive projects in cases where the EGA Service is participating as service provider, ensuring that our involvement is well-coordinated, timely, and impactful.
The successful candidate will provide oversight and planning for the EGA helpdesk and operations team. This includes coordinating day to day priorities, identifying training needs, ensuring a consistent high quality customer experience, and ensuring continuity of helpdesk and operations service. The EGA team is managed using agile methodologies combining a mix of the RT ticketing system, JIRA, and Confluence in a collaborative environment. The EGA is currently transitioning from being a centralised to a federated resource, that will require new practices and guidelines to be drafted as new nodes become operational.
About the EGA
The EGA (European Genome-Phenome Archive, is a resource for permanent secure archiving and sharing of human genomics. We host more than 16 petabytes of data, that includes more than 3700 studies and 8600 datasets. The EGA, co-managed by the CRG ( and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI, is an active partner in numerous international and national projects and contributes to establishing international standards in genomics and data security. The EGA team at CRG is a diverse group (currently 20 people and steadily growing) composed of bioinformaticians, developers and scientists from various backgrounds. Whom would we like to hire?
Must Have
* You have at least 1 year of experience with the management of operations, including systems, online services, or data management services.
* You have experience in working in scientific international environments.
* You have experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (system administrators, developers, data curators, project managers) to achieve operational goals.
Education and Training
* A postgraduate degree in bioinformatics, life sciences, IT, or equivalent experience.
Languages
* You have an excellent level of English, given this is the daily used language for communication, with the team and international partners alike.
Technical skills
* You have familiarity with ticketing and project management systems such as RT, JIRA, or Confluence.
* You have advanced MS Office & Google Docs skills, in particular presentations, documents and spreadsheets.
Competences
