The detection of corona and surface discharges occurring in high-voltage systems is still challenging due to the low energy involved in the discharge process, which is typically below or similar to the background noise level. With the rapid trend toward electrification of transportation systems (electric vehicles, trains, electric-powered ships, and more electric airplanes and all-electric airplanes in the research and development phase), the widespread use of power electronics with high dv/dt, the need for compactness, and in some cases the low-pressure environments (aviation and high-altitude power lines), electrical discharges tend to occur more frequently. Therefore, their early detection is a need that needs to be addressed using advanced sensors. We propose to use optical and solar blind sensors due to some important advantages such as high immunity to electromagnetic noise or wide bandwidth (solar blind band, near UV and visible spectrum).
Requirements:
1. Hold the nationality of a member state of the European Union (IMPORTANT: mandatory).
2. Have completed undergraduate studies with a minimum average grade of the academic record equal to or greater than 6.50 (scale from 0 to 10. See equivalences on the website of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities of Spain).
3. Have completed the studies for admission to a Ph.D. program between the 1st of January 2022 and the start date of the contract (September-October 2025).
4. At the time of joining the affiliated entity, the candidate must be enrolled or accepted in the Electrical Department PhD program of the UPC.
5. Not having a doctoral degree.
The selected candidate will work on the measurement of electrical discharges in different high-voltage environments including low-pressure environments for aircraft applications, combining experimental research, theoretical developments, numerical programming (intermediate/high level Matlab and Python programming is required), and finite element method modeling. The candidate will participate in international collaborations and meetings and will have the opportunity to participate in national and international conferences and to publish in prestigious scientific journals to disseminate the research results to the scientific community. The student will be part of our active research group, being in contact with other PhD students working on similar subjects in the fields of high-current and high-voltage systems and electrical engineering.
We look forward to receiving your CV!
